What to Expect & Why?

You Ask - I Answer

Why do I need Therapy?

Reaching out for someone to talk to is an individual choice. There are many reasons why people come to therapy. You may be struggling with your child or spouse, dealing with anxiety or depression, or dealing with long-standing psychological issues. Sometimes just talking it out with a sympathetic listener or group helps but you know you need professional help when nothing else seems to be working and you are ready for change. Therapy can help by providing insight, support, and new strategies for all types of life changes or challenges. Seeking help is a sign of strength. Don't wait and take that first step to help.

What is Therapy like?

Everyone will have a unique experience based on the individual and their goals. It is typical for us to discuss the primary issues and concerns in your life during our sessions. We would then typically schedule weekly sessions that last around 50 minutes. Therapy can be short-term or longer-term based on what we are trying to accomplish. We will discuss positive changes in your life that may require action outside of the therapy sessions. For you to be successful in therapy you must be an active participant bot during and between sessions. When you attend therapy at NJ Counseling center you can expect compassion, respect and understanding, and perspective. We will provide you with real strategies for enacting positive change based on effective and proven techniques along with practical guidance.

How can you help my child?

Yes, I have been working with individuals and families for years. Most recently I have spent time at St. Joseph's Hospital where I was focused on children and their families. I am able to provide counseling for both you and your child if needed. During our initial session we will discuss your challenges and/or goals to determine what the best path to success is. Together, we will determine what type of sessions will be needed. We can provide family/group sessions or individual sessions when needed.

How often do I have to attend?

While all of our paths are unique we typically schedule weekly sessions to assure we can establish, monitor, and successfully complete a strategic plan for you. Sessions typically last around 50 minutes and duration of plans will vary based on your individual and/or family goals.

Can I just take medication?

In some cases a combination of medication and therapy is the right course of action. Working with your medical doctor you can determine what’s best for you. It is well established that the long-term solution to mental and emotional problems and the pain they cause cannot be solved solely by medication. Instead of just treating the symptom, therapy addresses the cause of our distress and the behavior patterns that curb our progress. You can best achieve sustainable growth and a greater sense of well-being with an integrative approach to wellness.

Is Therapy fully confidential?

Yes, therapy is protected by law and fully confidential. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client. In addition, we provide a client portal which can be used for your own confidential journal and securely sharing information/emails. However, there are exceptions required by law to this rule. Exceptions include:

(1) As mandated by law.
(2) To prevent a clear and immediate danger to yourself or others or suspicion of child/elderly abuse or endangerment.
(3) Where the therapist is a defendant in a civil, criminal, or disciplinary action arising from the therapy, in which case client confidences may be disclosed only in the course of that action.
(4) Where the client is a defendant in a criminal proceeding and the use of the privilege would violate the defendant's right to a compulsory process or the right to present testimony and witnesses in his or her own behalf, or both.

Do you accept insurance?

We currently provide "Out of Network" services. Your insurance may cover a portion of the session but it depends on your plan and the specific service provided. I am a licensed therapist (LCSW), so I have the credentials needed. We can help you with the claims process by providing pre-filled forms and walking you through the steps. You can call your insurance company in advance to find out the available benefits for out of network behavioral health services.

How can I pay?

Payment in full is required at the time of services. I can assist you with submitting claims to insurance companies by providing the necessary forms, so that you may seek reimbursement. You can make your payment in cash, check, credit card or Venmo.

Are you specially trained?

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with a Master's degree from New York University. I have received specialized training from the Ackerman Institute for family therapy and couples counseling. I have also received training from the Minuchin Center for the Family. Both of these organizations are thought leaders and innovators in psychology today. In addition I have also received special training and certification in dealing with trauma/sexual abuse.
